Coronation Street forces pregnant star to smoke | TV News | Now Magazine
The pregnant actress, 35, who plays Carla Connor in the ITV show, gave up cigarettes when she discovered she was expecting her first child with boyfriend Adam Huckett.
But her character has a storyline where she takes up smoking – and bosses have asked the actress to use herbal cigarettes.
‘She isn't best pleased. It was hard enough for her to give up in real life,' a source tells The Mirror. ‘And even inhaling smoke from herbal tobacco surely can't be a good thing for a mum-to-be.’
Dr John Moore-Gillon from the British Lung Federation, confirms even herbal cigarettes can be damaging to pregnant women.
‘If you're smoking herbal cigarettes, all you're doing is substituting the burning leaves of one sort of plant for another,’ he says. ‘People think that since they don't contain nicotine they're safer.
‘Ordinary cigarettes contain several thousand compounds, but you still get tar from herbal cigarettes, which could do you just as much harm.’"
Coronation Street weekly review
Even more problems for the Morton family when Mel was involved in breaking up a fight at a nightclub, which ended up in her friend Abi being seriously injured.
Sean has had problems, too..."
Marcus, the love of his life, keeps dashing off Down London, where he is staying with his ex. Sean has been going mad with jealousy, which almost propelled him into the arms of Liam's cousin Tom. Only Tom claims that he's not gay (despite being almost as camp as Sean himself), which has left poor Sean humiliated.
Tom and Liam have gone into the T shirt business, but they badly need an investor. Now, who do we know with a bit of money and an interest in Liam?
No, not Dev, don't be silly. Dev's had enough to think about really, what with being Nina Mandel's love puppet and everything. She's using him as a plaything, and he doesn't like it as much as he thought he would. In fact he tried to end it, but Nina made it quite clear that if he was no longer available to satisfy her lustful needs, Prem wouldn't be available to put business opportunities his way.
At least the course of true love is running a little smoother for one couple on the Street. David and Tina are back together again. For some reason, though, this has made Gail question whether she should really be enjoying a romance with Tina's dad. She fears it'll mess with David's head yet again, and we've all seen the consequences of David having a messy head.
The highlight of the week was undoubtedly Vernon's classic song, "(Don't Fall Into) The Mason's Arms," a ballad concerning Liz's dalliance with Harry Mason. In case you missed it, you can listen to it here.
And in other news, Ken is working in Roys Rolls again. He missed the cut and thrust of catering.Thursday, 28 August 2008
Zienia lifts off in Coronation Street again
Having been poisoned by Teresa, Jerry collapses and hits his head.
He's rushed to hospital, where he's treated by a seasoned lifesaver, played by Zienia Merton.
She may not be a household name, but Zienia played Sandra Benes in hit sci-fi show Space: 1999 between 1975 and 1977.
For those still in the dark, Gerry Anderson's series centred on the long-suffering crew of Moonbase Alpha, who were lost in space when the satellite was blown out of orbit in 1999.
Zienia may have hung up her Moonbase Alpha uniform 31 years ago, but she's still very much in demand in soapland, even if she nearly always plays medics.
Serial addicts will have spotted her playing doctors in Family Affairs, Doctors, Casualty and The Bill.
The only soap she didn't play a doctor in was EastEnders, where she portrayed a receptionist."
